  • Pilot

I was just wondering if anyone else was a fan of this 70s group.
I used to be a member of their fan club and they used to make me go weak at the knees when they were on Top Of The Pops.
Dave Paton the lead singer was dreamy!

Pilot - were they a Scottish band? I remember they also sung -'January' I was about twelve or so then.

They were indeed Scottish, formed by former Bay City Roller members.

Actually herald this is my unique version!

'January' was a great song too. They had quite a short career sadly.

I remember Pilot and their single January. The song January can be seen and heard on youtube now.I think that is one of the best songs to ever come out of the seventies.I still remember hearing it for the first time on a cold wet miserable day,sat in a dingy cafe with my mother, drinking a cup of disgusting tea.It came on the radio, and i thought Wow! It really cheered me up,and has remained in my memory ever since.

Remember them well when i was at school in the 70s seeing them on top of the tops performing January and Magic i think it was about 75, corny but very catchy tunes, good stuff.
My best mate at school flash thought they were great.

Just A Smile was a good one as well.
I think that was their 3rd and last hit.

                          Here's Pilot singing January

I always think David Paton looks a lot like '' The Honourable '' Lalla Ward.

I'm new here but didn't all the band members of Pilot play in The Alan Parsons project on various albums?

                              Re: Pilot

Back in the day I'd only heard the singles but I got a compilation CD a few years back and really enjoyed it in a cheesy, handclap '70s sort of way (and nothing wrong with that). After some digging about I found a Japanese band called Beagle Hat who'd worked with David Patton and come up with a sort-of modern day Pilot sound. Patton and Ian Bairnson also released a new (well, some old songs redone) Pilot album in 2002 called Blue Yonder. I didn't find it as catchy as the '70s stuff but it still sounds like them.

Here endeth my Pilot ramble for today.
