"Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood was notorious in its day for being banned from the Radio 1 playlist and "Top of the Pops". Despite this it was still freely available in the shops and so got to the top of the charts for a while. Does anyone think if it was released now it would get a warning label on it e.g. " Parental Guidance-Explicit Lyrics "?

"The Riddle" by Nik Kershaw apparently isn't supposed to be about anything at all.

If all songs were as clueless, bring them on. This is one of my favourites.

Actually The Vapors themselves say the song is about someone who's lost their girlfriend and is going crazy, which just shows it doesn't do to jump to conclusions about things.

Not many people will know this, but one very popular female singer who has had a record banned by the BBC is Shirley Bassey. It was in the late 50's. The song was called "Burn My Candle (At Both Ends)". I wouldn't like to say this for definite, but I think it may have been about a threesome.

Well, the lyrics seem quite sensual for the time but I can't get threesome from them (believe me, I've tried!!!)...

The song "Krisko Kisses", which was featured on Frankie Goes to Hollywood's first album, is referring to a practice which cannot be shown in porn films even now. I think at the time of the album being released most people would have been pretty ignorant of the meanings of some of its lyrical content.

I hope I'm not developing a mind like a sewer to think such a thing. Holly Johnson at first denied there was anything sexual in nature about the lyrics to his song Relax and remarked that "only someone with a mind like a sewer" could think there was anything obscene about it.
He must have assumed they hadn't seen the video.

I agree about Holly Johnson, in every way

Bananarama's "Robert De Niro's Waiting" is apparently about date rape. ("Boys living next door are never what they seem.... A walk in the park can become a bad dream...")
