Model Kits

I know that around September 1985 Kellogg's Corn Flakes gave free model aeroplane kits inside their cereal boxes which needed to be assembled a la the toy in the Kinder Surprise eggs - Kellogg's advertised them on TV around that time, and a Thames TV off-air of the Superman film on the 5th of that month contained a Kellogg's advert promoting them in one of the ad breaks. Someone who was in my class at school (First Year Juniors) had taken one to school with him and annoyed our teacher when he played with it in class.

Just looking at Amazon, I was surprised to see just how expensive model kits seem to be now. The Airfix 'Dambusters' Lancaster I built in the 70s is now £37 and the RRP is north of £40. I remember buying Airfix kits in their 'series 1' range - they came in bags rather than boxes - and they were about 25p circa 1976.
Also, I had dozens of those boxes of Airfix HO-oo scale soldiers, even the astronauts and Tarzan boxes. I had 3 of the Airfix playsets, the pontoon bridge assault set, gun emplacement set and French Foreign Legion fort set. I think there was also a Robin Hood set featuring a castle and maybe others. Those little soldiers soon became mixed up and I stored them in old metal tins left over from Christmas shortbread.

The style and build of your planes reminds me of a Kiel Kraft Ace. I still have a Kiel Kraft Gipsy my dad built in the early 70's.

I built quite a few models from kits, mostly Airfix, with some Frog, Matchbox and Revell, the likes of Tamiya etc being difficult to obtain in my area. The majority were aircraft, followed by ships, then land vehicles. I also bought the Airfix Modellers magazine quite regularly. Remember Dick Emery was president of the Airfix Model Club. I think I got most kits from Woolworth's, but there were also several newsagents who stocked a fair selection nearby. In the 70s we most often holidayed in North Wales. I would want to go to Prestatyn for a day as there was a toy/model shop in the high street that I loved to go into and spend some of my holiday money. If I remember correctly it was the right side of the street if you were walking up the incline, and was the first shop in a small shopping centre, though as I am talking about getting on for 50 years ago I can't be absolutely sure about that.

Re: Model Kits
I think I may still have my Airfix modelers club badge somewhere.

Re: Model Kits
Mostly airfix kits, I was even in the airfix modellers club that was fronted by Dick Emery
i remember one of the modelling tips was to make bullet holes in the models by holding a pin in a pair of pliers, heating it up on the gas stove , and piercing the model with the pin.
hence I had a Sunderland flying boat that looked like a tea bag and my mother asking what was that awful smell in the kitchen

Re: Model Kits
We had very little to amuse ouselves at my our draconian boarding school. So I took up model areoplane making. Every family visiting day Mum would bring me a new model and I would begin immediately the family left and proudly show them next time they visited. The students had a model plane competition from time to time. I recall I won it at least five times. The winner pocketed the other boys lollies. I must have made 100 model planes during those days. My fave were the Brit Spitfire and Hurricane and WW2 German bombers.
