I know that you are a one-post wonder and have not come back since (many years later), but I have just re-read some of the comments on this thread and thought that I would write an addendum.

I haven't invented anything here - perhaps it had all been invented by the media and those who had experienced those house fires, and they were the ones that put two and two together? - was it a coincidence that those fires happened when the picture was hung on their living room walls? I am just relaying what was mentioned at the time because this is indeed a forum where we talk about things that have happened in the past, and so there is no time limit as to what to go on about. I still think of it now and again as we did briefly have a copy of that picture. If it had up to me back then, I wouldn't have even gone inside that shop back in 1985 - I just don't know why they had purchased that picture back then, and as they are both no longer with us, I can no longer ask them.

Apparently, the original Crying Boy was a Firestarter, no kidding.

Back in the late 70s early 80s my aunt and uncle bought a picture of a young boy crying and leaning against a tree. I always hated that picture , but one...

I remember seeing this hokum reported in the tabloids in the 80s,
nothing about the blue Chinese lady, but I do recall the original selling for ££££s a few years back

TBH when I first saw this painting, I thought the author wanted to express his heavy feelings through this little boy, but I was sorely mistaken. When I found out the true meaning of this work, I fell into shock. It traumatized me a little and somehow influenced me because I now prefer only pencil sketch. IDK what is related to this, but now I don't like to draw in colors, maximum in pastel colors. So I started to get more interested in this painting, and I decided to ask my mother about it, but she refused me and said more not to talk about it.

I had no knowledge of this picture until I read the OP, although my mother is vaguely aware of some fuss surrounding it back in the 1980s.

Was there any particular reason for it's popularity in British living rooms back in the 1980s considering it was already around 30 years old then? Is there any connection between the Crying Boy and the trend for pictures of Pierrot the sad clown in the 1980s?

As a paranormal author, I have included a chapter on The Crying Boy in one of my True Ghost Stories books.

I guess the connection wasn't made between the 50s and the 80s because there wasn't really the type of TV shows that indulged in those kind of stories?

I saw a pair of these at the market the other month, a matching crying boy and crying girl. Someone bought them though as they were gone when i went past the same stall later, I wouldn't have touched them, i remember the stories of the fires.

I probably was back then - all these coincidental fires seemed a bit too much, and I was seven years old at the time.

I gave this ‘story’ a quick google but didn’t follow the links as they’re all weird and wonderful sites ... paranormal sites , obscure websites ..

Yawn ... not for me ... I’ll stick to my history / documentary/ sports sites and channels
