  • Did you have a Matchbox car suitcase?

I use to keep my matchbox car collection in a carry case made specially for them. The front had a picture of matchbox cars on it and inside it had plastic holders to put the cars in.
I've tried looking on the net and this is as close as a picture as I can get, but it's not quite what I had.
Anybody else have something like this?
And do any of you have any pictures?

PS I'm sure I had the green pickup truck shown at the bottom of the pic.

I remember one of my friends had a carry case like that.

There was one shaped like a racing car that folded open.

I have two of these cases. I went through a Matchbox/Corgi phase a while back and bought two cases from a retro shop in my town...mine have the old white Ford GT on the front.

I used to have one of those old coloured dustbins full of matchbox cars - never had an actual case.

I think I have a few left in the attic. But if there's one I'd chose to keep, it would be my Iso Grifo.

Similar to mine, same blue colour, white handle and yellow background but both mine have the white FORD GT 40 of the time on the front.

This is one of their bargain basement 'GT' range. They took the molds from earlier cars and fitted them onto plastic bases with the then newer style wheels. Made in Bulgaria they were. I have a few from this range, a MK 2 Escort, same Iso Grifo as you and something else (can't remember the actual name as they didn't put names on the baseplates). These came around the end of the actual Lesney Matchbox releases.

Re: Did you have a Matchbox car suitcase?

I have two, a small 2-rack one with a picture of a saloon car race on the cover (c.1972), and a larger navy blue 4-racker with three zooming popular Matchbox models on the top. Both are now minus their handles, which I must have around the place somewhere.
I still have ALL my die-cast cars, must amount to hundreds of them, and still collect the pre-'80s ones from eBay! Re. the topmost photo, I've got the armoured car from that, as well as the double-armed breakdown truck which I think is called a 'Tow Joe'.

Re: Did you have a Matchbox car suitcase?

Bought a couple of the new 2011 Matchbox cars recently. They're made by Mattel now. Lovely detail but not as weighty as the originals by Lesney Matchbox...Also they don't have the opening doors or boots etc. What I really miss is the diecast baseplates and the 'suspension' the cars used to have under Lesney when 'Superfast' was first introduced...Mattel Matchbox do make 'The Lesney' series which does have diecast bases but I've never seen those in actual shops over here. Seen them on ebay but not willing to pay over the odds mark up prices to the rrp....

I do feel glad Matchbox is still around and Mattel have begun to respect the 'marque' so to speak and made the cars hark back to glory days but it is sad that Mattel one of Lesney's biggest competitors own them now. The Tyco Matchbox cars were awful - too fun and garish, Tyco were bought out by Mattel. They do sometimes use molds between the two marques of Hot Wheels and Matchbox thesedays and some molds are actually from the original Lesney range i.e. the FAWN DUMP TRUCK.

I also own Toe Joe. Love the look and name. Another fave of mine is the Freeman Intercity Commuter. Well in advance of modern MPV's today and I've wondered if it was based on some concept car of the past. I know the gorgeous Vauxhall Guildsman was based on a concept and have even seen pics of the concept.

I have several of the Mattel Matchbox "Lesney" series. Not too many places in my neck of the woods carry them either. Only Kmart and Toys R Us seem to have them and now both are few and far in between. I got most of mine at die cast collector's shows.

In the late '90s Mattel also briefly owned Corgi if I'm not mistaken and incorporated some of the Corgi Juniors into the Hot Wheels line.

how many cars does your suitcase hold mate.
yes i did have loads of corgi and matchbox cars back in the eighties early nineties but i never had a suitcase for them.
in fact i nevert remember a suitcase coming out specifically for these old cars.

Mine had I think 4 racks in it (2x2), it wasn't as old as the one somebody has pictured with the ford gt on it, but the above mentioned blue one with three zooming matchbox cars sounds like the one I had. Can we have a picture please Roxxy?
