Read these books when I was quite young. The original stories centred around real railway working practices. Rev. W Awdry then made up the story around it.
Who cared about rules when you were young?

Me & my brother really like this series of books, & along with the TV series.

I was a little old from them by then, but my cousins were really into it.

So the tv show was based from books.

How similar was the tv show to the books.

Re: Thomas the tank engine and friends

I used to have the four LP records of the stories, and they were read by Johnnie Morris, of "Animal Magic" fame. I loved them to bits - especially the second in the series. I think my parents must've given them away at some point, as they weren't in the house when I had to clear it after they passed away

I remember having some tapes of Johnny Morris reading them from the library at one time.

He gave James a Welsh accent for some reason IIRC.

The Ringo Starr narrated stories were also released on tape, my sister had one with a Ladybird book.
