When I was really small I had this long tube thing that was ribbed a bit like an elephants trunk (This is starting to sound weird I know) but you could whirl it around and it would make a noise like a whine. It was pink!! That all sounded very weird but it was true.

Hmm! I have a very vague and distant memory of something like this but it also reminded me of when I was a child and we used to make a gadget/toy that made a similar noise. We would cut a piece of cardboard into the shape of a disk (about the size of the top of a mug/cup) then make two holes in it so it looked like a button. Then we'd thread fine string through the two holes and tie the ends together to make a loop of string with the disk in the middle. we would hold the looped string between our hands (as if we were about to do cats cradle) & swing it round & round in circles to 'wind it up', then we'd pull our hands apart to 'unwind' the string, then move them together again as the momentum of the disk rewound the string, we'd build up the rythme. Keeping the string fairly tort. Once we'd built up speed it would start to make a humming/whining sort of noise. We coloured the card disks or stuck paper shapes on them so they made a pattern when they were spinning. Little things please little minds - well they did in those days anyway!! :-)

we did this too, kept us amused for hours, making them was just as much fun as playing with them

He He. You guys are amazing. It wasn't a false memory after all. There are so many things I have to ask you all!! There were also these little things that were like a mouse, ladybird, spider etc and they had a magnet on the bottom so you could move them around on a flat surface. If anyone remember those I will be truly amazed.

Oh Yea! I had a little white mouse and my brother had a spider. They came in little square boxes. I think they must have been quite expensive at the time because it seemed to take weeks of 'please mum, all my friends have one' before we actually got one each ourselves. I loved it. Goodness knows where it is now, I wish I still had it. :-)

I had the mouse too. Yes, they came in little square perspex boxes. Well, I am truly amazed! I wish I still had mine too
While I am about it.....there were also these fluffy snakey type things with eyes that were on a string. They were really soft and they were about 5 inches long. I don't know what you were supposed to do with them really though.

you were meant to play with them and use your imagination to create little adventures and situations for which the snake would venture. Nice and simple times i recall

Hey! did we live in the same house?!?!? They were on see through thread like fishing line if I remember rightly. They looked really cool when they were being demonstrated but weren't so cool when you actually got one of your own - a bit pointless really I think. The only thing I remember doing with them was weaving the thread between my fingers then pulling on it to make it look as if the furry snake thing was moving on it's own through your fingers. My magnetic white mouse was far more exciting.

They were called Zooney Tubes round my way. I really, really wanted one and I never got one

I'm going to resist the temptation to get one from a pound shop only because the neighbours would know it was me playing with it and they're still giving me funny looks from the Clackers incident

Ah yes these were great fun to make and really worked well if you got them right.
I wonder if kids still make these.

I had the tube sound wotsit, but the originals didn't have the flanged tip, and they were very long, I was fascinated by it and whirled it around much to the annoyance of many I think thats why the current ones are smaller, as you would tend to whack someone in the face with the original length.
