  • Can anyone identify this late 80s/early 90s TV advert? - Duke of Earl

I'm trying to identify a UK TV advert from the late 80s or early 90s (possibly earlier). I always thought it was for sausages, but I'm no longer certain.

It featured a man entering a boardroom (possibly greeting an older man with something like "Ey up, pater, how's tricks?", then doing a ridiculous chicken-like dance on his own to a version of Duke of Earl (not necessarily Gene Chandler's original recording).

The details may be slightly off after all these years, but both me and my brother are 100% certain about the silly dance to "Duke of Earl". Does anyone remember this advert?

If it was sausages it would have been Wall's. Lots of them at that time. Sounds familiar. The Duke Of Earl...I've never seen that in a film or on Top Of The Pops. I don't think. But it rings a bell.

There's nothing on the Internet Archive with the keywords but they do have British adverts from that time.

You probably saw this on the wikipedia page for the song...

In 1988, an Australian harmony group dubbed 'Dukes of Earlwood featuring Armondo Hurley' reached No. 12 in Australia with their cover of the song. This version's success followed the popularity of a TV commercial for Decoré Shampoo which featured an adaptation of "Duke of Earl" as its jingle.

Gene Chandler is still around. You could hunt him down. LOL.

Hellman's Dijonnaise also had an advert or adverts using the tune, but replacing the lyrics. That came out around 1993. It seems unlikely that there would be two British companies using the same song in an advert. And the sausages you recall could have had Hellman's mustard on them?

Can only track down that one advert and not anything like what you recall. So keep your options open.
