I read about a 16-year-old boy who was supposed to have committed suicide after seeing this film. Also, I remember my dad saying he'd heard they'd had to stop the film on one occasion because of weird things happening in a cinema where it was being screened, like fire extinguishers going off on their own and the curtains swishing back and forth, things like that.

The Warner pre cert (which I also have) is the original version.
Have a look here at the alternate versions of the film.
The cut of the film i'm talking about is "The Exorcist : The Version You've Never Seen".
It was released on September 22, 2000.

I'm gonna see if I can find the network TV version, the edits sound interesting to say the least.

it scared me the first time i saw it and ive been watching horror for 20 yrs.
its the bit in the bedroom that scares me all the sounds she makes etc.

and all the strange statues you see.

It's certainly a strange one mate.
All the religious symbolism certainly had something to do with it.
The version we actually watched that night was the 'Version You've Never Seen Before', with all the subliminal imagery and the spiderwalk bit.
We had never seen that actual cut of the film before, so maybe it was the subliminals that had the effect.
Nonetheless, we are two grown men with many years of horror movie watching behind us, and we were terrified.

I suppose i'll have to make a point of watching it again to see what happens.

thats creepy a priest outside the cinema on its original screening.

when you say you and your mate where scared by it even though you knew what was coming sometimes it scares you more knowing whats to come.

or it just happens to scare you both on that occasion for no particular reason.
and ll bet you dd not expect it t have the effect it had on both of you as you both said nothing for 10 mins after it finished.

The thing I find most puzzling about this film is that I've heard many people fainted during a scene in which she was in hospital having a needle stuck in her neck. Can anyone please explain to me why that would cause people to faint?

Well, a lot of people (including myself) are not too fond of needles.
I can happily watch a slasher film no problemo, but if there's a scene involving giving blood or injecting heroin I have to turn away.

On the subject of The Exorcist.
I first saw the film on satellite TV, dubbed in German in the late 80s.
As i'm sure many of you will remember, the movie was unavailable in the UK for many years, so just getting to see it, in any language was a biggy back then.
Then a year or so later I bought a bootleg VHS, in it's original language.
Then I was lucky enough to find the original UK VHS release in a charity shop in the mid 90s.
So by the time it was released on DVD I was more than familiar with it.

However, one night, my friend & I decided to watch the movie again, having both watched it many times before.
But for some unknown reason, on this particular viewing me & my friend were both scared to bits !
No idea why, but when the movie ended we both sat in silence for 10 minutes or so, then he said to me -
"Dude, I dunno why but that scared the @£%* out of me"
I completely agreed with him. Even though we knew exactly what to expect it just totally freaked us out.
No idea what happened that night, but for some unknown reason it really got to us.

Also, in my home town there was a priest outside the cinema during the original screening.

The films really boring. However, the notion of demonic possession is something I believe in and my parents have seen for real way back when on a few occassions. I think the fear the film created in cinemas was psychological as the 'air' of fear breeds fear and hysteria. I've heard of st Johns Ambulance staff literally lining the walls of auditoriums playing the film in 73....when I saw Blair Witch Project there was only a few in the cinema but when the film ended everyone stayed for the end credits-in total silence-it was because some were scared and it bred more fear in us so we all sat there til the credits ended.

When I was in high school our English teacher, a former Catholic priest, showed The Exorcist as our end of the school year treat! Actually we all liked him cause he had a pretty good sense of humour.

How can you write with no lights on?

i think he uses candle light or the light the tv gives off.

does sound scary though.

Demon possession (never mind reality and indepth research) has a lot of potential for horror fiction (had a go at demon possession myself) and film making (Evil Dead anybody?). I reckon it only got banned because of waht Linda Blair does with the crucifix and as therre might be kids doing research into history for school on this forum/site I won't go into what she does and says with t. As for A Clockwork Orange, like Reswervoir Dogs, I was led to beleive it was violence all the way through but when I actually saw it I was thinking loudly at the ends IS THAT ALL??? in disappointment
