    When the Exorcist was shown in our local cinema all those years ago, people were protesting outside at the showing of it and the local paper reported an ambulance being called for someone who fainted in the cinema.

    Quite a bit of it's reputation seems to come from it being "forbidden fruit" as it wasn't available on video.

    A Clockwork Orange & Driller Killer had a similar reputation.
