1) Instead of a beautifully done score the soundtrack is nothing more than an off-the-shelf compilation of various pop artists.
2) Modern contemporary music in a period film instead of music either from the period or a score that's evocative of that era. Two notable examples that come to mind are Moulin Rouge (set in the early 1900s) and Dirty Dancing 2: Havana Nights (Hip Hop in 1950s Havana???)
One of my favorite bits of film music: Richard III (1995)
I'm a big fan of John Carpenter soundtracks, 'Assault on Precinct 13' in particular.
Also the band known as Goblin, best known for their Italian horror movie soundtracks.
American Graffiti was one of the first films to use mostly existing songs for the soundtrack, which fitted in with the Rock & Roll era setting & the plotline involving Wolfman Jack.

goblins music scores are amazing on films such as suspiria, phenomena, deep red etc.
the soundtracks for the superman films are amazing as well as for supergirl.
inferno by dario aregento music done by keith emerson of emerson lake and palmer.
Vangelis's scores on Blade Runner, Alexander and Conquest of Paradise are just amazing. Also the ending to Runaway Train where a slightly re-worked Vivaldi piece(Gloria in et terra pax) is absolutely chilling and incredibly moving. I also love anything that uses 50's-70's stock music by composers such as Werner Tautz, Heinz Kliessing, Laurie Johnson, Syd Dale etc.
Barry Gray's 'Zero-X theme' from Thunderbirds are go is probably my all time favourite tune from any movie.
No offence to fans but cannot stand Vangellis, nor John Carpenters own music in his films...I did like the music in The Thing - the main theme is haunting...ET is nice too...

When I Was Good No One Remembered, When I Was Bad No One Forgot
I have two major pet peeves about movie music...1) Instead of a beautifully done score the soundtrack is nothing more than an off-the-shelf compilation of various pop artists.2) Modern contemporary music in a period film instead of music either from the period or a score that's evocative of that era. I totally agree with you.Another example was the Kirsten Dunst version of Marie Antoinette. The modern pop music in that completely put me off.Wasn't a great film to begin with but that made it worse.
