Does anybody have any memory of a film made c.1978, that was set aboard an American cruise ship where a lethal epidemic broke out? I can't remember the name of it for the life of me- the storyline was that the vessel couldn't dock as the virus that was ravaging the liner's occupants was unknown, and it would have risked spreading had the ship put into port anywhere. The ship's doctors are thus left with having to cope with the mounting death toll as best they can, without being specialist microbiologists or scientists.
A decision is made to cast all the ship's mattresses overboard as these are believed to harbour the disease- one passenger gets hysterical because he's stashed a load of money or drugs or something in his mattress, and he's shown screaming in despair as it floats away behind the liner's stern. Later on, the same guy contracts the disease and becomes delirious, hallucinating wildly. He thinks he sees a beautiful motor yacht floating off the ship's port side and gleefully jumps overboard, thinking it'll provide a means of escape- only to discover once he's in the briney that in reality, it was only a wave, so that's the end of him.
The film ends happily in that eventually, a cure is provided for the victims and the ship docks in LA or somewhere similar. Ring any bells with anyone??
