1970's European Tale - Children's TV

Can anyone remember a children's programme shown a few times in the 70's - it was in the same vein as 'The Singing Ringing Tree' and 'Three Nuts for Cinderella' (i.e. Tale from Europe).

My recollection is of a man who ate some snake like creature (or fish) and this enabled him to be able to talk to animals (I think the meal was initially meant for a King).

Can anyone put me out of my missery?
