  • Tottie: The story of a doll's house

Another gem I had forgotten about.

This was an animated series made in 1984, based on a book published in 1947. At first glance it looks like a nice little story about dolls living in a dolls house, but it is actually quite dark with a story line that EastEnders would be proud of!

It certainly toyed with my emotions. The theme tune alone sets a scene of comfort and security and Birdie and Mr Plantaganet are the innocent-looking, kind little dolls that you can't help loving. Then the evil doll Marchpane moves in. She's such an b**** she sets the house on fire to trap their son Apple and make Birdie try to rescue him, knowing she will easily and spectacularly burn to death because she is made of celluloid! What a psychopath!

No happy endings here. Apple is saved but Birdie dies, although as she is so simple and optimistic, she enjoys burning to death because she looks so pretty!?! Mr Plantagenet and Tottie also agree that she looked beautiful in the flame!?! All very disturbing. As for Marchpane, she gets put in a storage box because her owners think she is too nice to play with.

A very clever, dark story which had me in tears when Birdie died.

That sounds so sad... I vaguely recall it....

Yes, having done a quick search on youtube I remember it...Oliver Postgate did it - I recognised the narration. Sometimes I cannot bring myself to watch things with kids animation that contains darker 'real life' themes to it. And this is one of them...Odd how people are, I can watch SAW horror films or Gangster films but not something like this as its...terribly sad.

I agree. I think it is because it is breaking the innocence of childhood at a time when you still believe the world is full of happy endings. That sad feeling stays with me even as an adult.

Here's a clip. The evil Marchpane enters...

I remember this being freakishly scary, with a name like Marchpane (what were missers Postgate & Firmin thinking?!) you knew she would be up to no good.

I want to see Pingwings. Caught a short clip on youtube and that like other Postgate things are more my thing, they make me smile even when I'm down.

I watched this once, I think I was drawn in by the title, but found out it wasn't what I thought it was about!
