Aged 20+ I was still recording Grange Hill for when I came in from the pub. In my early teens I'd get home from school and stick the tele on and watch all the stuff for kids years younger (play school, jackanory etc) now I've caught my eldest (12) watching peppa pig on youtube. Is it genetic or do we all do it ?

Re: Too old for it ?
I would venture that it's only "our" group, (now 40-50) that started it.
Collectors have always "collected", but 40-50 year olds are the ones who remember the **** 60's repeats and early 70's stuff, and the VHS being marketed.
Hence we used to tape the "old stuff", whenever repeated, for future viewing in case it never got shown again.
Parents, i found, were not that fussed as TV was all a new thing to them as kids, and just assumed, once broadcast, that was it..
(i used to sit in front of the TV on a Saturday/Sunday night and record the Theme tunes on a little cassette recorder)
We had not forseen the invention of DVD or digital storage.
getting every episode of Thunderbirds on VHS was a major mission, and even when it first got marketed on VHS, It would still be a vast collection, due to tape size limitation.
My entire gerry Anderson collection could now sit on one small shelf..
but its doesn't..
In true 21st Century style, I only own them all digitally now. no tapes, DVDs, etc..
just true digital HD to be shown on flat HD wall screens..
Finally, we have caught up with the most basic of Gerry's premises

Re: Too old for it ?
A couple of times in recent years I've found myself between jobs & to fill time I've started to flick through the cable channels to see what's on.
Often I've ended up watching Nickleoden or one of the Disney channels. I found a few things I would have liked when I was younger.
Recently I've bought Round The Twist & Maid Marian on DVD & have enjoyed watching them again.
I've also started to save up for the Gerry Anderson box sets. I've still got to watch all the DVD's I got for Xmas first. The Trickster On The Roof

Re: Too old for it ?
Although I loved some of the children's shows from my childhood and still love them in a nostalgic way, I don't watch them any more, apart from the odd clip. I don't have anything against people who do though. Do whatever makes you happy! That's what I say.1976 Vintage

Re: Too old for it ?
Thing to remember is that all the shows we loved as kids were written by adults. That means there'll be stuff in there that you wouldn't have "got" when you watched it as a child but you "get" it now you watch it as an adult. A good example of this is from the first Toy Story film - when one of the toys comments that Woody has "Laser Envy". No kid is going to get that reference but every adult would.
I love that kind of thing. It's about the only good thing about growing up
It's perfectly natural to enjoy kids tv, I know I do. My Trap Door DVD is one of my favourites in my collection
Could be a good thread starter - things in kids shows that kids don't get
Cheers,
Finnthedude.

Re: Too old for it ?
You're never too old for your childhood. As a child who was born in the very early '70s and who grew up in the '80s, I've been nostalgic for those years ever since I've left them. I never feel any shame about buying DVDs of old children's TV I watched as a child - Bagpuss, Pipkins, Paddington, Dangermouse, Fraggle Rock, The Flumps (and yes, I have all of these on DVD), because it was an integral part of my past.
If nostalgia is such a bad thing, TV programme makers wouldn't also wallow in it and make so many shows celebrating the TV we grew up with. I understand that our parents may not feel as nostalgic because there was less for them, but I've heard the older generation talk about the TV and other entertainment they grew up with plenty of enthusiasm for those times.
As already mentioned, there are a lot of children's TV shows which feature plenty of references adults can enjoy, that go over children's heads. Dangermouse is still very watchable as an adult for this reason, as well as being simply very funny whatever age you are."We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner!"

I wonder mate have you had strange looks when you buy these dvd's and hand them to the cashier.
One thing that makes these old shows so good is that they are simple.
The music is fantastic.
