Early 90s BBC Drama

Can any members recall an early 1990s BBC DramA, it might of been 1991 - not much later though.It was about a Scrapyard place and though it was different it was a similar I recall in how the storyline grew to The Mangeress! All else I recall is about a very very un-kempt man who was in it, who must've easily been in his late 40s to early mid 50s at the time.
