Well, it would have boiled dry after the second series ... there wasn't a third ...

According to Wikipedia, there have been 9 series so far with two more to come.

WE all have differing opinions on what is good or bad. What seems to be the overwhelming majority though is that typically ITV produced more **** than the BBC. If you had ask a cross section of the public to name a good/funny ITV sitcom most would say Rising Damp. As for a BBC one and you would get about 10 different answers, from OFAH, Dads army, Blackadder,Good Life etc

Why were ITV so bad at sit coms?

I've wondered this as well, there are a few other worthies, (The Army Game, One The Buses, The Lovers & Shelly come to mind), though ITV have done quite well with comedy dramas over the years.

2 pints of lager and a packet of crisps is the worst program on television compared to all other national and international sitcoms and even those from undiscovered civilizations ...
including those programs produced by extra terrestrial life forms who we have yet to make contact with.

Another bad one I don't think was mentioned before was A Prince Among Men, that had Chris Barrie trying to be a Kevin Kegan style ex-footballer turned manager.

Even worse was the fact that he opted out of Red Dwarf to be in it as well.

I am a big fan of british sitcoms and i can watch the vast majorty of them, you have to take them at face value i suppose, however I think if I had to choose one candidate for the worst sitcom I would have to go with 'on the buses'. Yes it is a classic but whoever cast reg varney and bob grant as a couple of womanising "jack the lad" types should be ashamed. Even it sitcom land it impossible to imagine them two getting off with anyone other that an Olive lookalike.

Back in the 70s, On The Buses was a family favourite and I remember watching it very often. Having seen it again more recently I have to say that it was diabolically bad and the closest thing to televised sexual harassment I've ever seen.
I've also tried to like My Family because I think both Robert Lyndsey and Zoe Wannamaker are very talented, but I just don't find it funny.

Re: Worst TV sit Com ever.....

What this thread proves is how subjective sitcoms can be, and our varied tastes. When I watch (often well-hyped) sitcoms these days, I usually come away thinking 'I could write a better sitcom than that!' - and one day, I just might.

For what it's worth, sitcoms mentioned here that I really rate include 'Dear John' - a classic, I've got some friends who've got the entire 2 series on video and it still makes us laugh now, 'Game On' is also great, 'Home To Roost' and 'The Good Life', but as I say, these are just my opinions.

Sitcoms which I truly hate (with a passion) include 'Chance In A Million' - the worst sitcom ever made (but I know some people liked it), 'Rosie', 'Bottle Boys' and '2.4 Children'.
"We're the Sweeney son, and we haven't had any dinner!"

Is my taste in sitcoms really that bad,

Father ted rules , best visual comedy sitcom.
I liked ever decreasing circles and keeping up appearances as well.

Selwyn froggit was filmed in skelmanthorpe or 'Shat' (which is the old local name) which is a stones throw from where i live and i remember them filming it. Mind you it was dreadful

Some of the worst i remember

last of the summer wine (living in the holme valley didnt help, bl**dy tourists everywhere)
                            on the up
                            you rang m'lord
                            hi de hi
oh dr beeching (can you see a pattern? )

There was one about lots of people living in a house and the father spent most days in a greenhouse with a neighbour drinking revolting eastern european sherry. That was pretty bad.

And although i love ronnie barker and the open all hours sitcom, Clarence was absolutely dreadful.
Till death us do part was another ropey one

After Bill Owen died Last Of The Summer Wine was never the same.

The one with the Dad in the greenhouse was There's No Place Like Home. A young Martin Clunes was on of the children who kept moving in or out of the house. My Dad reckons it would seem funnier now to him as my brother & sister have come and gonea couple of times before eventually moving out for good.

I could come with Hi-Di-Hi, You Rang M'Lord was OK until they ran out of ideas & I didn't like Oh Dr Beeching.
