Kids From DeGrassi Street

Anyone else remember this American TV show from the 80's? I used to love this show and the follow up - DeGrassi Junior High, which was more gritty at times.

I can't remember the individual plots but I do remember one storyline where one of the girls, Spike I think she was called, got pregnent at 13!!! This was scandalous in a kids TV show at the time. Not so unusual these days!

Also, just found out that both TV shows are being released on DVD early next year!

It was actually a Canadian show, shot in and around Toronto. There is a De Grassi Street in Toronto, but the school is fictional. This site http://www.degrassi.ca/locations.php has a description of the various locations, if you're interested.

Fantastic show both the original and follow up show.

I remember watching this at times, it could be both hard hitting & very amusing at seemingly random amounts.

There was Degrassi Junior High, which I don't remember watching much because I was at secondary school by then & didn't get home in time.

Degrassi Jr High is already on dvd.Well,in Australia it is,anyhow.
Kids Of Degrassi Street i have one R1 dvd of that.

Ok.
it was when a male teacher was cracking on to a male student.
i remember them both in the car and the teacher while in the car started stroking his upper thigh.
the kid id say was under sixteen.

hope i do not get in bother with this.

Remember this show well.I seem to remember there was also a storyline where this schoolbully type character caught AIDS.

Yes i remember that well.

it has a habit of doing storylines on serious subjects.

the writers where not afraid to do stopries on riky subjects.

what makes it more surprising is that it was a kids show.

yes you absolutely right there mate.

you have to give the directors writers credit for doing such controversial subjects.

I didn't like the follow up, I mean, we had Grange Hill and that started doing 'issues' as well, it just got depressing for me...especially when I'd come home from school and these were on in the cold, Autumnal / Wintry evenings which added to it...I sometimes think all this sort of stuff lead to the sexualisation and turning kids into bolshy types who challenged parents and teachers all the more until we have the sort of disgusting society thats all 'me, me, me' now - the riots of last year is an extreme example of it all too...

It's a tricky to deal with issues, a lot of American sitcoms used to have "Very Special Episodes", some of which seem very daft in retrospect.
