Childrens drama from the early 80s

I want to say BBC, but may have been ITV. I am fairly sure it was early 80s, but cannot be sure. It was a period (Victorian era ?) drama for kids, might have been about a mining community, maybe in the north east, and the name may have been s boys name (lead character)
