  • Howards Way

I live in the area where this was filmed, I even remember driving over a bridge and seeing them filming a sequence.

Occassionaly frequented pubs that were used during filming (The Jolly Sailor, The Vine, The Linden Tree).......does anyone remeber this as a piece of classic British tv, or a load of old tosh!?

The theme tune was by Simon May.

I quite enjoyed 'Howards Way' at the time, and we used to holiday a lot just over the other side of the Solent from where it was largely filmed. I remember going off it after a while though, purely because I got bored with it and I'm not sure I would be that interested in seeing it again.

I remember the short lived series 'Trainer' which was very similar in style to 'Howards Way' - just swapping yachts and sailing for horses and horse-racing.

To be honest I quite enjoyed it when it first started, probably because we spent some of the time location spotting as it was filmed locally. The novelty soon wore off though and some of the characters like greasy Ken Masters started to grate on me, and after the first series it seemed to go downhill.

Oh, and I remember 'Trainer' Austin....like you say 'Howards Way' on horse really.

I also grew up and lived near where it was filmed (East Southampton), I remember seeing it filmed quite a few times one time on Mayflower Park in Southampton. Loved it, the theme music was excellent and the cast wasn't that bad either. The Hamble and Warsash areas were already affluent before filming and the Jolly Sailor was always popular but after they started using it as a regular pub it was impossible to eat or drink there so never went back after the 80s. I wonder what its like now? I left Southampton about 15 years ago and havn't been back to that area in about as many years.

Tbh I haven't been in the Jolly Sailor for quite a few years now, but as you say, it was always a popular pub with 'yachties' and even more so during and after Howards Way.....it wouldn't surprise me if it's still the same.

I enjoyed this series, was it once filmed at Moody's Boatyard on the Swannwick Marina?

It was actually the 'Elephant Boatyard' just a short distance away from Moodys.

I remember it, I was just too young to know what in the heck was going on. I keep meaning to seek this out to re-watch and see if it still grabs me. Oh, and to reaffirm how truly awesome Ken Masters is.

That would be Trainer, which the BBC made to replace HW but was never as popular. My Dad was surprised it even managed a 2nd series.

Here it is. http://www.youtube.com/user/Leisurecruise I used to like it when Kate O'Mara was in it. She has an amazing body.
