Help finding a family Christmas ghost story

Hi there, not holding out much hope on this one as my memories of it are seriously sketchy..the only thing I'm certain about is that it was aired over the Christmas period of 1989.

Maybe a one-off or two parter, and I seem to recall children staying in or moving to a cottage in the country and there being some kind of mystery and ghost (perhaps time-slip), and this taking place on the stairs and a little landing or cupboard of the cottage.

Ah no,it was more kids/family orientated than MR James, and definitely Christmas 1989

If its the same thing I am thinking of then the boy is terrified of the cupboard on top of the stairs where ghostly noises like scratching etc is coming from.Was the cupboard door painted black?.For some reason possibly as a punishment the boy is placed into the cupboard near the end of the program by an old man.The boy then being rescued by friends and family at the end of the program.Is this the same program or something diffrent from what you remember?

Possibly the same programme battyrat; there was definitely a cupboard on the landing that was somehow involved, but I can't say I remember the colour...I'm desperately trying to think of a bit more for people to have a think about...there was some kind of mystery (possibly involving a soldier?) and ghostly manifestations..I think 2 children in the cottage, in a rural setting. It was a one-off possibly two-parter; family type of sunday tea time ghost story, but aired between christmas and new year 1989. I don't even recall it being that good, but it's bugging me that I can't find it, and nobody seems to remember it
