  • please help identify late 1980's children's drama

Please help, I have recollections of a kids drama series where a girl had run away from home then the family take in a girl and she is a bit of trouble but the little sister likes her.
The main thing I remember is at the start and end on screen there is a silver tree with little hanging photos of family on it and last episode photo of girl who joins family has her photo put on little tree.
Really annoying me, need to find out what it was
It must have been on late 1980's or very early 90's.

Nice one will, I was racking my brains trying to remember what it was called. I also remembered the family tree silver frame at the end

Sorry for my late reply. Thanks Will as soon as I read the cuckoo sister I knew it.
Really loved that drama, it is one of the few alongside moondial, tom's midnight garden and the children of greenknowe that sticks in my mind.
        So happy now :-)

Gosh I can't believe anyone other than me actually recalls The Cuckoo Sister! It is my all time favourite television series ever. It aired in 1986, adapted from the novel by Vivienne Alcock. The story is told from the perspective of Kate Seton (hence my username ), a girl of around 11, who discovers that her parents had another daughter called Emma two years before she was born, who was stolen from her pram & never recovered. One day, a girl named Rosie turns up at their door with a note from the woman she believes to be her mother. In the note, which Rosie has not read, the woman confesses to have been the baby taker, & informs them that Rosie is in fact Emma. The story traces Rosie & the Seton family's reaction to this revelation, the attempts made to establish the truth of Rosie's parentage & the emotions that come into play in this complex situation. There are themes of class & privilege too, as the Seton family are monied lawyers living in Hampstead, whilst Rosie has been brought up in the East End in poverty.

I actually found this forum whilst searching for info online about The Cuckoo Sister. Apologies if it's bad form to resurrect an ancient thread, but I'm really pleased someone else recalled it. The first three episodes have been uploaded to YouTube just recently. I have the entire series on VHS in my loft, I probably should upload it myself. I found a copy of an audio book of the story on eBay some years ago too. Even though it's a text aimed at early teens I think it reads well for an adult too. And yes the ending credits featured a silver family tree photo ornament with pictures of Kate & her parents in three of the frames, with the last frame empty. In the final episode credits, right at the end, the final frame is filled with a photo of Rosie/Emma.

I'm thrilled to to find this fantastic series even briefly talked about! Thank you to those who posted
