Could it possibly have been 'The secret adventures of Tom Thumb'? This was early 90s but had the science lab, the weird maze like buildings, the other weird creatures etc. It also had some REALLY freaky stop motion with real actors....and it is on youtube

Thank you, it's similar but not quite. The one I'm remembering was mainly silent (probably just music and effects) and was a bit darker.

It was a TV special shown a couple of times around Christmas in the late 80s. It was a modelling stop frame animation like Nick Park but not Grand Day Out.

I remember it was about some creature that went on an adventure through some buildings and thing I remember most is that he found himself in a sort of scientist's lab. It had bits of odd creatures in jars that helped him escape. Their reward was getting him to switch off their power supply thus letting them die. Was quite poignant and remember liking it as a kid.
