  • The Best 'Why Don't You' Series, Ever!

It was shown in the early 90's (I think) and featured a Cardiff Gang using some kind of basement as their hideout. They showed you how to make multi-coloured milk and how to step through a postcard, but the best thing about the whole series was "Mad" Ben Slade!

Through most of the series, he kept telling the gang that he'd invented a time machine, but no one believed him, so eventually, he left the gang. Before he left, he gave them a piece of paper, saying "If you ever need me, call this number." A couple of episodes later, the gang needed Ben, so they rang the number that he'd given them, and it was a public phone box in the middle of the high street that Ben just happened to be walking past as the phone rang! I thought it was hilarious!

At the end of the series, it transpired that Ben had actually built a time machine (That was a large frame-like construction in the middle of a field) that was powered by the multi-coloured milk that the gang had made earlier in the series. The last episode ended by showing the gang walking into one side of the time machine and not emerging out of the other side.

This series of WDY has stuck with me for the last 25 years. Does anyone else recall this particular series?

I do to a degree, Ben also made something out of a hoover that kept turning up after he stopped being a regular.

Didn't he also clone himself from seaweed at one point?

So how do you make multi-coloured milk?

Damned if I can remember, but it's brilliant at powering time machines!

Ben also bumped into the Newcastle Gang, when they were going round in an old bus driven by the sheep mascot the show had in it's later years.

A Pre-Byker Grove Ant (or was it Dec?) was part of that gang.

              You're right Richard1978! I believe Ant McPartlin was a Why Don't You-er.

Oh noooooo Why Don't You....... lol

I thought it was amusing; a sort of Blue Peter hosted by kids

Wasn't Gillian Taylforth on it? (Kath Beale Eastenders) when she would have been about 15 or something

Do you really believe the other side without provocation would launch so many ICBM's, subs and ships knowing that we would have no option to launch as well? It would break our MAD Treaty (Mutually Assured Destruction) not to mention the end of the world as we know it.

I remember an episode where someone was wearing a badge that lit up and you had to guess how they were controlling it. I think it was a wire down to a button under their toe!

Weird how you remember these fragments...
