BBC Childrens Christmas drama late 1970s early 1980s

Can anybody help me with a BBC drama that is driving me mad to remember

I have a vague memory of series that was shown (I think in 1979) in the run up to Christmas, most likely on Sundays. I'm sure it was 1979 because I was in hospital for some of it with an operation and was gutted to miss it.

Memories:

- It was probably set in the 1930s just pre-second world war

- It involved a young boy who was being pursued by baddies who looked like spivs. I think these may in fact have been magical rats.

- It had a 1930s style car that magically could fly taking off in a snow covered landscape.

- A statute came to life in one episode.

Sounds like the Box Of Delights, but that was 1984-5.

IT IS! Now I read the episode guide it makes sense.

I'm mixing up 2 memories I think. The main of it must be the Box of Delights - I think the statue coming to life must have been from a repeat of Toms Midnight garden; that was made in 1975/6.

I've also managed to muddle up some memories at times, being convinced something happened at a different time than it actually did.
