Can anyone shed light on a dim and distant memory of a scary modern-day, live-action children's drama from the early/mid-1980s?
A group of children explored an abandoned (?) country house that had an empty stone hippo statue in the grounds in which they could gather, or hide;
The house interior was possibly a studio set. The children were chased through the house hall by slow-moving scarecrows, or possibly living mannequins;
There was possibly an old lady who lived in the house, and was either a care-giver, care-taker or a witch character;
The story may have been based on a book. I vaguely recall reading about, though not reading, a children's novel with similar details.
I appreciate these are almost hopelessly vague details, but I keenly recall being terrified of certain scenes. And yes, I'm sure I've actually seen this!
If this has been answered elsewhere, please direct me to that thread, and thanks for your help!
