  • Invision announcers.

Long time ago when ITV was regional there were continuity announcers, some on camera as in my regions Anglia and ATV who became almost a friend of the family guiding us thru the evenings viewing.
ATV's Peter tomlinson who was the man who invented Tiswas called "Today is Saturday" was the weekend announcer famed for introducing the late Friday night horror film surrounded by teddy bears sent in by viewers and then at 1.00am before closedown give a reminder about the small extravaganza beginning at 10.10 am the mighty TISWAS, before wishing us all goodnight, unplug the tv and his final words "goodnight to you all again".
Ring any bells? any memories of announcers?

In-vision continuity was re-introduced as part of Children's BBC/CBBC on 9 September 1985. From then until 1994, this came from the main BBC1 continuity suite itself, referred to as "the broom cupboard" and introduced by various presenters including ANDY CRANE, ANDI PETERS, AND PHILIP SCHOFIELD.

Charles Foster was an announcer on a few Granada shows, & might have been on screen in Crown Court.

I remember the in-vision announcers on ATV/Central, including dear old Peter Tomlinson and his panda introducing the friday night horror film after News at Ten. Also as previously mentioned Mike Prince. Others I remember include Sue Evans, Pat Astley, Derek Hobson (of New Faces fame), Helen Lloyd, Gary Terza and Avril Carson.

lol That's My Dog was not a show I watched avidly.

Some announcers would talk straight into the camera and remain looking at it until the programme began. Others would announce the programme looking into the camera then turn themselves at an angle as if they were going to watch the show as well and had a TV slightly to their side. One female announcer was very prone to doing that on ATV/Central but I can't recall which one

Peter Tomlinson links had him looking straight to camera for a seemingly long time before they went to programme, this was carried on to Tiswas when he cued tele-cine, the gallery was having fun.Thinks Peter's nickname was "poochie".

AngliaKnight, I think you are right about Peter Tomlinson's nickname. I also recall those long gazes into camera on Tiswas with the production crew giggling in the background.

Nice to know i.m not the only one to remember and appreciate those Tiswas moments, the kids watching wouldn't have got it, the early shows were just ATV staff having fun linking the cartoons and features.
Any members have memories of Anglia's continuity, they had in vision announcers, birthday club during kids tv etc.
