The Quatermass serials have been mentioned several times but I would have loved to have seen them upon their first transmission. Streets emptied and people who didn't have a TV watched on neighbours and friends sets when the serials were on.

twilight zone there has been quite a series of this thru the decades.

You can get a lot of the quatermass stuff on youtube now.
Blakes 7 is another not quite before my time but not far off it.

About 20 years ago I became interested in classic TV & Blakes 7 was one show which captured my imagination, especially as it had a lot of shared history with Dr Who.

yes very special, it was the first big tv event, after the coronation ofcourse, the bbc didn't expect it to be this popular they hit lucky. I remember my parents and other "grown-ups" talking about it and perhaps thats where my love of sci fi / horror came from. Can't recall the young itv hitting back with anything similar, know later they had the american imports twilight zone, alfred hitchcock, outer limits and one step beyond but as for homegrown progs' my minds a blank, they certainly had nothing that came close to quatermass.

Quatermass was groundbreaking in its time '50s on bbc, there had been nothing like it before and people were spellbound.

My Dad remembers they were the talk of the school the day after.

so quatermass was more than just the films then.
There was actually a series

my late father was a big fan of the quatermass tv programmes.
I got the dvd boxed set and imagined him watching it on a tiny old b&w tv.

That's one sci-fi show that deserves to be relaunched - provided they keep to the spirit of the original.

I got the DVD boxed set and imagined him watching it on a tiny old B&W TV.

That's one sci-fi show that deserves to be relaunched - provided they keep to the spirit of the original.

I remember there was a partial remake of The Quatermass Experiment in 2005 on BBC4, which was performed live & had the interesting addition of having Pope John Paul II's death announcement flashed up on screen during the middle of it.

I didn't see it though, but have the box set, which the Dr Who Restoration Team did a great effort to clean up.
