I know that "Fix It" bloke interviewed him, probably on Radio Luxembourg - probably one of the very few British DJs to do that?

Even in the USA he tended to have dedicated shows rather than a guest slot once he became a big name.
Amazing to say how big a star he was, that he never travelled outside his home country. No wonder we have so many Elvis impersonators here in the UK - it is the closest we get to the real thing, even when he was still alive.

I very much doubt that Elvis Presley ever appeared live on TOTP - it would have been such a scoop. I am surprised how Tyne Tees got so many nationally known acts up to Newcastle to appear on Razzamatazz, The Tube or The Roxy.

Some Americans came over but sometimes without their regular backing band, so the BBC orchestra used to back them, with interesting results.

I know that not all acts were available to perform on TOTP (mostly as they were based in the United States), so I was a bit miffed at Pans People and Legs and Co dancing in lieu of the actual acts. I mean, if I heard a song being performed, I would have liked to have the artiste themselves perform it rather than dancers dancing to it - I mean, it was a music show rather than just a disco.

On the other hand, although it was nice to see Tony Christie doing Amarillo himself when I saw him on the TOTP Christmas special in 2005, it would have been nice to have had the Peter Kay Comic Relief version played - you didn't get the proper benefit of the song without it. When they did Benny Hill's Ernie, they did the right thing and include the "milkman" video rather than have Hill in the studio performing it.

The sad part, due to various scandals, there are many groups that appeared on TOTP that will no longer be shown to the public. Many of us who watched it the first time around, will now be denied a chance to see a group we remember fondly.
not true. they can be seen unedited on the net, no problem...

If you mean the cover version ones, sadly they weren't anything to do with the TV programme...

It's interesting that the episodes of TOTP were first repeated in 2011 on BBC Four, and they started from April 1976 onwards. Was it any coincidence that Coronation Street episodes on Granada Plus when the channel started up in 1996, were also started from April 1976 as well?

I assume that April 1976 marked a watershed in British television where as of that month, programmes were officially archived from that point onwards, and would be officially complete as of that time. It seems like to me anyway unless anyone else knows any different?
