Nope, def not Harry O. The actor is still alive and in a new series with Michael Crawford.

Well, my other guess would be Hooperman.
he was a Harry and had a dog,but the actor John Ritter is dead (recently)

My first though was Hooperman, but I was around about 13 when this hit the screens, which makes it later in the 80's.
I was gutted yesterday to read he has now passed.(2003)
What a shame. May he R.I.P

Checked the opening credits for several cop shows on YouTube, including Harry O,Cannon,Hunter,David & David,Riptide,etc..Its none of those.
Only one not on there is Hooperman..so I'm sticking with that for the time being

What about Heart to Heart didn't they have a dog in the opening sequence? or Petrocelli(spelling) not quite a detective but....

Rockford Files? and an interesting link to John Ritter as James Garner took over from him( when he passed..... to use a Most Haunted phrase) in the sitcom 8 simple rules with Katy Segal

Could it be "The Law and Harry McGraw" ?

I know its 80's and not 70's but im also struggling with Harry (other than Harry O).

                              Worth a shout
