Re: The Likely Lads
The film is fun to watch, especially the camping holiday & all the stuff that happens to Bob's car during the film.

Re: The Likely Lads
I thought the film version was better than the tv programme. They seem to disagree a lot if they had a night out as the lads,Thelma was always brought up

Re: The Likely Lads
I heard that James Bolam had a falling out with Rodney Bewes in the mid 1970s after he accidentally let the press know James Bolam's was expecting a baby before an official announcement, or something on that lines.
After this I guess James Bolam wanted to make sure he wasn't in the public eye so much as Terry Collier.

Re: The Likely Lads
Interesting that james bolam blocked repeats of the show.
Cant think why he would do it.
Ive seen it recently on bbc 3 or something i think.
Had a very good cast as well.

Re: The Likely Lads
'Newcastle' Brown Ale, is indeed not even brewed on Tyneside anymore.
When the old S&N Brewery closed down in Newcastle, production was moved over to the Federation Brewery in Dunston, Gateshead.
However, 2-3 years ago, production left the North east altogether and is now carried out in John Smiths Brewery at Tadcaster, Yorkshire.
The brand had been protected under the 'Protected Geographical Status' laws, but these were removed when production was moved.

Re: The Likely Lads
Not sure where it is made now but it hasn't been made in Newcastle for about 4 years and the brewery was demolished last year. Sad to see it go. Smelling hops as I wandered around town is another fond memory.

Re: The Likely Lads
Just remembered James Bolam got on a bus I was on a few years ago, heading into Newcastle. Nobody seemed to notice, even though he stood at the front as there were no seats. Perhaps it's because you never really see famous people in Newcastle and, well, you'd never expect to see JB on a bus in Jesmond!

Re: The Likely Lads
Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads is repeated quite a lot on Sky. As are some of the B&W series of Likely Lads. The christmas special WHTLL was shown on FIVE christmas just gone.

Re: The Likely Lads
'The Likely Lads' film was on ITV3 one night earlier this week. Only saw the start (was on late), but was great to see parts of Newcastle, some long gone.
They went for a last pint at their 'local' The Fat Ox, which was on some old terraced streets in South Benwell, which were being knocked down at the time (hence being written into the story).
Also a great line from Terry (Bolam) when bob comes to see him fishing....
"You want a coffee? I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six"
As for the lack of repeats on TV, that is down to James Bolam who has blocked repeats of the TV series being shown.

Re: The Likely Lads
Is this the same Newcastle that makes Newcastle Brown Ale?

Re: The Likely Lads
Not my link - all thanks to Richard for posting! As a Geordie it is great for me to see all of those places as they were then. My favourite comparison is the one at Manors car park. Just look at how those little trees have grown! I do a lot of work around Cruddas park flats. Unfortunately it is still a very run down area of Newcastle. There's a similar site showing comparison shots from the film Get Carter. I think it's by the same guy.Originally posted by Marabelle View PostTricky Thanks for the site...really interesting to see what is there today.
Looks much better but the old ones have their charm as well.
