we got talking at work about old public information films

And I remember the Green Cross Code in the early 70s

I guy gets out of a jag after a you lad kicks his ball across the road
so the guy gets out of the car and shows the young lad how to cross the road
When he’s showed him how to cross the road
the young lad says "nice car mate where you get it you nick it"

The actor in question had a porn style mustache and a long brown leather coat on

I need to know who he is we tried searching the net but no joy

Can't find the Green Cross ad that you refer to, but the main Green Cross man was David Prowes who later became Darth Vadar - isthat any help ??

Yes..there was one before Dave Prowse, but I can't remember who..
Dave Prowse, although West Country born, lives in Croydon.
my home town, and I was at school with his two sons..James and..err..the other one..
David is a lovely man, as was James (bit of a poser at school though)..as for the other one???

Well Daz it looks like i might have the measure of you this time :-)
According to Wikipedia and everything else i can find Dave Prowse was indeed the first GCC man.

The Green Cross Code Man (sometimes known simply as "Green Cross") is a costumed superhero character created in 1975 as an aid to teaching young children the Green Cross Code, and for promoting general road safety. British actor David Prowse MBE, a bodybuilder and former Mr. Universe (and the physical actor of Darth Vader), is famous for his portrayal of the character in a well-known series of Public Information Films (PIFs) sponsored by the Central Office of Information for the UK Department of the Environment. The light-hearted spots ran on UK television from 1975 to 1990. In the films, the Green Cross Code Man character has the power to teleport from his monitoring station at Green Cross Control to any location where youths are in need of pedestrian safety instruction. He accomplishes this by use of a wris****ch-like "Dematerializer" device. On these missions he is sometimes accompanied by a whimsical robot companion. His signature exclamation of surprise or disbelief is "Green Crosses!" and his slogan is "I won't be there when you cross the road / So always use the Green Cross Code."

However since the poster says early 70's and the GCCM was actually a cartoon before Dave Prowse was given the role in 1975 im not too sure what to think.

The odd thing is i remember the advert in question, i even remember the little scrote of a kid asking about the car but i cant for the life of me remember who was the actor or even find anymore info on it.

I wondered if it was a different campaigne, as I remember it too, Was there not a STOP,LOOK,LISTEN set of road safty ads? Either shown before or even along side "The Green Croos Code" ones

Perhaps it wasn't a Green Cross advert as such, just simply a Road Safety Ad. as the original poster Golf V5 said in answer to my first reply that it was prior to David Prowse

Thats what I was trying to say, Golf V5's not looking for the original "Green Cross Code Man" Just an actor from a road Safety Ad, and I think thats what Daz meant too.

My sister had a rabbit when she was little called "Tufty" after the road safety squirrel, ironically it got run over.

I think the guy in the jag with the leather coat and the dodgy tache was cockney rocker Joe Brown.

Can't find any pics of this ad though.

I am fairly certain you are referring to Joe Brown who was a cockney 60's Singer.

He catches the young boys football and then teaches him about the green cross code etc in a "cool and hip way" if you get me. They were trying to appeal to young audiences. I am sure the kid shouts something cheeky back to him.

Unfortunately all the pics on Google are of him later in life I think with shorter hair and no moustache.

Jimmy Saville's was the "Clunk, click, every trip" campaign-I remember that one very well.
