American 80's children's tv about a boy and a Wizard

Hi all,

Does anyone remember an American 80's children's television series about an american teenager who meets a wizard/magician in a white room? There is also an owl in this room too. Thats all I remember sadly, but It must have made an early 'harry potter' impression on me, as I've been trying to find out what the series was called.

The other thing I remember was that the dark haired boy could only get to this magical dimensional place at the back of an alley?

Anyone know anything about this show?
