  • Help with a weird animated short shown on BBC, early 1980s

I've looked all over Google but can't find this anywhere.

It was shown on bbc2 either late 70s or early 80s and it was this animation where this land is populated by creatures with, er, extended willy things on their stomachs which they wpuld use to push humanoids into this large pit.

One scene that really scared me was when one of these creatures chased this polar bear round this hill, caught up with it and ate it. I was only 10 or so, but the blood was obviously red, and stood out on the white background: so it's not a very colourful feature. Not sure country of origin as there was no dialogue that I can remember.

That's all I've got. Any ideas?

What a vivid recollection! It's interesting how some animations, especially childhood favorites, stick with us. Several strange and dark animations from that era may meet your description. Have you looked into BBC's 'Nightmare' series or Eastern European animations from that time? They often have individual styles and moods. I hope someone will recognize it and help you find it!

Wow, that sounds eerie and unforgettable! Definitely a unique animation — maybe an obscure European short film or part of a surreal anthology

The style and the fact BBC2 showed it makes it likely to be an art-house or Eastern-European/ soviet-bloc surreal animated short (BBC2 aired a lot of imported arthouse animation in that era). It might have been shown as part of an anthology or a “shorts” compilation rather than as a standalone feature. (I didn’t find a catalogued title that matches the polar-bear / belly-appendage bits.)

If you still have any small extra detail, even a single image in your head (creature shape, did it look cut-out / paper / stop-motion / painted cells?), whether it was black-and-white or stylised white background, or an approximate year, that will help narrow it down a lot. (No pressure, same memory-fog happens to everyone.)
