OK here's a puzzler for you!

[Solo]

In the late 80's/early 90's my sister and I used to rent from the video shop a series of cartoons about a princess who, due to a mix-up at birth, thought she was a boy, and she wore trousers and went on adventures with her friend, a small blonde boy. There were often animals and birds around as well. The princess was tall with short dark hair, and the cartoons were sort of "manga" style, with big eyes and small noses etc.

Any ideas? It wasn't "Mysterious Cities of Gold", that's been suggested to me but it doesn't seem to fit.
