spaceships turning into robot - 80's

Can anyone help with this please - I have always had 3 shows where I got old and since wondered what they were (found the others - Drak Pack and Search for the Golden Monkey). Get this and I can relax :
Saturday morning tv, early 80's- perhaps a terrorhawks type show where (I think) 3 spaceships could merge together to turn into a big (red?) robot. Think it had a big X across it's front.
I dont remember much else - any ideas from the little I can remember?

No, afraid not.
Thanks for your reply but Im sure it wasnt an 'animation' like a cartoon, and also people were flying these things and they then combined together into 1 big robot rather than each of them actually being a robot. One spaceship became the body, the other a head and so on. Perhaps 5 of these ships altogether. It was a great show !

No worries it came to me straight away once I'd got animation/cartoon out of my head

I thought the theme tune rocked,, "Send a message out across the sky"
