Help! 90's drama series- Madrikal/Majikal??

This is really vague- the programme was on in Britain in the mid-late 90's but can't recall where or what era it was set!!

All i remember is a large house(or maybe some sort of antique shop?), with lots of eccentric characters- one being a Jewish guy called Mr Madrical/ Majikal or something(i thought his name came in to the title too-oh- and i don't mean Mr, Majika!)?? I swear i didn't dream it up!

Er, ...sorry! Forget my last post!! ...That was a Charles Bronson Movie. That must have been suggested by one of my more senior brain cells

I think it was definately, this time, 'Mr. Majeika' and Stanley Baxter was the main character with the bowl-cut hair-style

Nah, sorry, it wasn't Mr.Makeika. (i remember that well). It was on a lot later than that and it wasn't a children's series either, but i really don't remember what it was about- except for this Jewish guy!!

It's not the US sitcom Mr Merlin is it?

I think that might have had a shop. The main thing was a staircase through the clouds up to where Mr Merlin lived. I think the main character, a young man, was studying to become a wizard as well.
