Help with Cartoon catchphrase

There was some cartoon from a couple of decades ago, the main character had a helper who he called 'second banana' in a WC Fields type voice

I can't even picture this in my head so all I vaguely remember is him saying that catch phrase

Anybody else remember it?

For some reason I was convinced it was a cartoon dog that used the phrase - getting old!
