Upper class girl, working class boy

Firstly, apologies if this has been mentioned anywhere else on the forum, I have searched most of the threads.

This childrens series was probably around late seventies/early eighties. It was set (I think) in the North of England and was a period drama, early 1900's.

The girls name may have been Victoria. She was friends with a boy whose parents were working class and he was always scruffy. The series ended with him going off to work (coal mining?) and she went off somewhere. She refused to talk to him in the end as she had become old enough to realise that they were not in the same class.

this sounds like Andy Robson which was shown on ITV in the early 80s.
Hands up who fell in love with Stephanie Tague (Victoria)?.

i remember one episode where the headmaster of the school was so smitten with Victoria he was cooking her breakfast!

This TV series, set in 1910, ran from 1982-1983 on ITV in the United Kingdom and concerned a young boy, Andy Robson, sent from a pit community to rural Northumberland when his father is injured in a mining accident. Much of the early drama in the series comes from his lack of knowledge of rural life and the consequent scrapes he gets into with locals. Later on in the series, the relationships between Andy and his friends Victoria (Stephanie Tague on whom I had my first TV crush) and Alec (Stevie-Lee Pattinson), become more important to the drama.

The series had a haunting closing song, sung by Barbara Dickson (and written by BA Robertson who seemed ubiquitous in TV theme writing terms in the 1980s), called "The Best of Friends". Oddly the song has never been released in any format.

i used to watch it religiously mainly because of Stephanie Tague.
I remember cutting out photos of her from the TV Times. pathetic i know.
its a shame she gave up acting.
Thinking back the show was far better than some adult dramas we get today.

i have a few Radio and TV times from the early 80s and one TV times from 1967. I am not a collector but i kept them for sentimental reasons.
i can scan in a few pages if you like.
btw, i like your nickname, Marine Boy was one of my favorite series.

Thanks, I was just curious really as to where the cutting had come from. I was looking for Radio Times pages a while ago for some writing I was doing about 70s TV, especially early 70s Saturday listings. I mostly know the scheduals but wanted to see the real thing! There's an archive in London that I'll visit next time I'm up there.

Yes, Marine Boy was a huge favourite of mine too. And there are many eps on YT to get me all nostalgic.

the archive you mentioned sounds interesting. would like to hear more.
I have a few Radio times from the early 80s when they were still printed on that very rough paper.

its amazing the amount of illustration that magazine used. i think there is a book just on radio times illustration.

I will have to look for Marine Boy on DVD? What an upbeat theme tune that show had.

I've nabbed a couple of Radio Times off ebay..they tend to fetch £2/£3 ish each...make sure you get YOUR region though
