Old TV Film with Roddy McDowell ?

Hi all, I'm new to this site, but think it's a great idea. There're plenty of films and TV programmes that I'd like to see again, but can't remember the name. One that springs to mind is a TV film (might have been one of 3 short stories) with a guy in a mansion (who I think might of been Roddy McDowell). It was a thriller/horror, but all I can remember is that there were a lot of potrraits on a wall leading up a staircase, each picture showed a killer, and each one showed the guy getting closer and closer to the front door until there was eventually a banging on the door - pretty suspensful, at least I thought so at the time. Any ideas ?
