Thanks, I remember because it was the first time I'd seen it, & thanks to The Empire Strikes Back being reshown at cinemas in early 1983 I managed to see all 3 films in order within a few months.

We didn't have a VCR back then, so I was dying to see it again after fours years!

The Americans had to wait another two years until it premiered on TV in the states.
                  We were lucky!

Until well into the 1990s a film premier was a bit event, & many people with a video would make the effort to record a film they liked.

When pre-recorded tapes were expensive this was the cheapest way to have a copy unless you had a local video shop with good rental rates.

This is was a lot of old tapes found at car boot sales tend to have films on from the 1980s - 90s.

                      Good point!
Now that DVDs are dirt cheap, and Blu Rays offer better quality, a lot of people are dumping their VHS tapes.

ITV always seemed to premiere the best movies...

In the early 1980s when the rules were changed for TV showing from 5 to 3 years after release ITV had a summer season of blockbusters they were able to show earlier than expected.

I guess they had more purchasing power than the BBC for film rights.
