  • Captain Scarlet

Currently re-discovering Captain Scarlet (the original 60's series) with my two year old son, and have a few questions about things that I never noticed in my own innocent childhood viewing-

    (1) Why did Capt Scarlet sound like Cary Grant?

    (2) What was the point of the SPV's (Spectrum Pursuit Vehicles) being driven backwards, via a forward facing camera?

    (3) Who on earth did those bloody awful French accents for some of the Angel Interceptor pilots?
Still crazy after all these years.

1 He was actually meant to sound like Cary Grant, he was voiced by Francis Matthews, who was chosen because of his Cary Grant impressions.

2 To reduce impact in the event of a collision apparently?

3 Liz Morgan, she voiced several supporting characters

      Re: Captain Scarlet

Captain Scarlet is one of my favourites too ! In 1971 when I was 6. Im 45 now and still love it.

Destiny and Symphony Angels are my idea of "tres chic !" Very classy and I loved the white flight suits and helmets they wore. Although the faux French accent was a little dodgy!

Did you see the episode where Big Ben strikes 13 (I think thats the one - shall have to watch my videos again) The Angels actualy go out to Dinner with Captain Scarlet? The set for the episode is so nicely done.

I was too young to see Capt Scarlet first time round, but watched them when repeated by Granada in the mid 1980s & when BBC2 bought the rights a few years later.

When The Mysterons voice came on with the rings moving across the screen it used to scare the bejesus out of me!

Classic stuff! I have the original series box set, and the new recent version.
The New Captain Scarlet series was ruined by bad scheduling, but was fantastic!
If you ever get the chance to see it..do so. I think its Anderson's masterpiece

              Re: Captain Scarlet

I wasn't that keen on the newer CGI Captain Scarlet but I agree that it wasn't even given a chance by the scheduling.

Right from the first episode it seemed to change things around so that the Mysterons were the aggressors rather than them retaliating for the Spectrum guys destroying their base. then they mucked about with what the Mysterons could actually do to take over people so it made little sense and seemed to change each episode. The CGI characters were passable but the new vehicles were good and I thought it was a big mistake to pass up a reworking of the superb original opening titles and the way it set up the whole episode before everything got going.

              - Flying Saucer - I'm 45, too so we were probably watching it at the same time in '71. Those were the days
