  • Programmes Recorded on Your First VCR

I remember renting my first VCR from Radio Rentals in the early 80s, and lining up on a shelf a row of about 6 tapes all neatly labelled. I know i taped Boys from the Blackstuff and Tenko, it just seemed so cool at the time to be able to watch a show in this way.
What memories have others of their first VCR taping? My apologies if this has been discussed previously

I remember getting our first video, an Amstrad 4600 in time for xmas 1987.

The first thing my Dad recorded was a few minutes of Telly Addicts to see if everything was OK.

We got our first video during January 1986. It was a silver top-loading Panasonic, with a wired remote. That had to be ordered separatly, and didn't come with the machine. Off hand, I think I recorded an ep of Benson, on my first ever tape. Also some black and white movie called Georgy Girl. And an ep of the TV series of Phillip Marlow with Powers Booth.

      Not very historic.

One of the first things I recorded was a music show on ITV
called Rockstage. It featured performances from Squeeze, Stranglers, Motorhead & Girlschool, among others.

Me too! And the first thing I recorded was Doctor Who; (recorded all the episodes of Tom Baker's last season.) We used to go into the Radio Rentals shop to buy 'Thorn' tapes and I remember them being very expensive.

Got my first VCR in 1982. Remote on a wire that was concealed under the rug to stop the cat chewing it. One of the first things I recorded was the first ever It'll Be Alright On The Night. We had people coming round for weeks wanting to see it again. Played it to death.

Also The Norman Gunston Christmas Show which is still playing fine

I think a 3 hour cassette then was something stupid like £6-50 each?

I think the oldest complete shows I've got on tape are some Monty Pythons from 1989 when the first series was repeated on BBC2. One has the very mid 1980s TWO logo at the beginning.

We got our first VCR in 1987. I can remember I got the job of tuning it in and setting the timer. I can remember setting the timer to record Top Of The Pops.

But if my memory serves me correct, the first program I recorded to try the VCR out was, The Young Doctors (a rather cheesy Australian soap set in The Albert Memorial hospital)
Oh to be a kid again with a can of Top Deck on a hot summer day, now that would be good.

We got our first VCR in 1986 it was a present from my uncle and was a second-hand top-loading Hitachi which never really worked properly, nevertheless it was my baby! The first thing I recorded was Cyndi Lauper leaping about to her new song "Change of Heart" on a ship full of dishy young sailors! I was actually tuning the video in whilst recording this so the picture and sound bounces in and out a bit. It was some sort of kiddie's Saturday morning show that was on....I've still got the tape and if I wasn't such a lazy git I would play it right now to find out the name of the show.....anyway, the next thing I recorded was the AMAZING KATE BUSH VIDEO, EXPERIMENT IV, probably one of the best videos ever made!

The first time I ever put a finger on a video record button (to test our first VCR) I captured Yazz on TOTP singing her long-forgotten miss, 'Stand Up For Your Love Rights'. The song is instantly forgettable, but I never forgot that fab ring-pull encrusted jacket.

How was this a 'miss', Tricky? It reached no.2 in 1988. Hardly a 'miss'!
                              Heaven knows I'm miserable now.
