  • Hannah Hauxwell

One of the documentaries I will always remember was called 'Too Long A Winter', shown in the early 70s.
It was the story of this remarkable woman living on a dilapidated, isolated farm in County Durham with no electricity or running water in poverty and hardship, wearing rags. Unforgettable.

There was another documentary made in the late 80s called 'A Winter Too Many', and this showed how she had to sell her farm eventually due to ill health and since then has lived in a house in a village 5 miles from the farm.

There are several books, I remember buying them for my parents. she also did a TV interview - I can't remember who interviewed her but I do remember her being under the spotlight and sitting in a chair on the stage - look a bit like the 'mastermind set'

I think she is still alive and lives in a village beginning with 'C' I think but can't remember the name.

I understand she is still alive and is 83 now.
        The village is Cotherstone.
