  • What TV (or movie) spaceship did you want to live in?

I've loved space TV series and films for as long as I can remember. My first memories are probably of Lost In Space and I used to dream of living in a spaceship like their "Jupiter 5". It was like a 1960's American house full of mod cons but designed as a flying saucer. Fantastic! Star Trek's Enterprise - especially the Next Generation incarnation, was even better. It had a wonderfully evocative bridge, sumptuous living areas, a bar/restaurant (10-Forward) and those incredible holo-decks. What sci-fi fan would not want to visit a ship like that? Even STTNG's shuttle craft were great and I loved the episodes where the crew crashed on a planet and were holed up in a shuttle with something creepy outside. Whilst I loved the series as a whole, Blake's 7's Liberator didn't really do it for me. The ceilings were too high and the ambient light too bright to give it the cosiness of the Enterprise or Jupiter 5 (although I did like the seats on the bridge - looked like they were pinched from a mk 1 Ford Capri). The Millennium Falcon was too claustrophobic for my tastes and the Nostromo from Alien just too warehouse-like and gothic. Firefly's Serenity, on the other hand, felt grittily authentic and rekindled that sense of wonder. Even Red Dwarf - although a comedy, managed to generate tons of atmosphere ("there's no kind of atmosphere!") and kept that sense of wonder about living in space.

Anyone else share my love of TV and movie sci-fi, where the spacecraft, as a viable and believable habitat, really fired your imagination?

Alien did it for me. I was fascinated by it from reading the initial 3 part serialisation in the local paper when the film was due. I was only 12 and not old enough to see it although I could if I lived in the US. I asked my mum to buy me the novel (as a norm I didn't have the patience for books). Reading it just made me more eager to see it. I ended up buying pretty much any book relating to it. The whole production design was unlike anything i'd ever seen.

Finally saw the film on World cup final night 1982. It was on ITV after the final.

Cartimand - I think it was the Jupiter 2, (not 5), and I loved it also. That family in one place; one 'house'.

And there was that episode where Dr.Smith could make wishes and he conjoured up a working Jupiter 2 - but it was a model. Ooooo, I wanted that model.

The Eagle Transporters in Space 1999. Excellent. Though you couldn't exactly live in them.

You're absolutely right - well it was a long time ago eh?

Good call for the Eagles from Space 1999. They always made me think of fish skeletons and looked pretty convincing as working spacecraft (albeit not comfy ones!).

What about the 'Valley Forge' space ark from the 1972 movie Silent Running? That even had its own forests on board and struck me as pretty damn impressive.

Brilliant movie I agree, but the Nostromo was really just a big haunted house in space and not the kind of vessel I would dream of spending a tour of duty on!

I'd love to live on a spaceship with all that greenery. I think you'd proabably need that on long journeys to stop yourself going quite mad.

I would. It seemed more realistic than the usual sparkly antiseptic space portrayed by nearly every other sci fi movie made.

The Liberator would be cool to live on, mainly because one of the rooms is full of large amounts of treasure and money.

I always prefered the scorpio to liberator, it reminded me of the millenium falcon. You could imagine it ferrrying contraband and limping between planets, not like Blake in his shiny liberator.

There are aspects of the Scorpio I liked, though at times you could really see the three studio walls and the one left out for the cameras! All in all, I prefer the Liberator. The external design was more alien and despite the wobbly control positions, I liked the inside too.

Yeah but you never noticed the cheap sets when you were a kid. It all looked so cool.

On a similar note, I always had this memory of Logan and Jessica racing around in this supercool land speeder better than the one from starwars and Francis would sometimes turn up in an even cooler looking one. That memory didn't turn out so well, but on the plus side Donald Moffat was far better than I remembered.
