Series about an astronaut hit by a solar flare?

I can remember a series (think it was only a 10 part) about an astronaut who was trapped outside a space shuttle and got hit by a solar flare. When he looked into the sun afterwards his IQ went through the roof and he had to wear special glasses to stop this happening. Anyone else remember this? Its been bugging me for ages!

Think it was mid to late 80's
