early 90s BBC sunday night thriller/horror

Had this programme imprinted on my brain as a child but can't remember the title. I'm pretty sure it was BBC1 possibly early 90s and on a Sunday night. I'm sure it was a mini series or could have been a two-parter. it was about this half human/ half animal possibly a science experiment that went wrong? Anyway i'm sure it escapes. I think there were a couple of children in it but not sure. I do vividly remember one scene in a stables where this thing was hiding and do remember lots of fields. Sketchy details i know. if i remember any more i'll add to the post. hope you can help!!

I remember First Born, about an experiment that resulted in a half human half gorilla hybrid, but that was a few years earlier, about 1988.
