Yep, Sherbet sang 'Howzat' and had loads of other hits here. They had to change their name to 'Highway' when they toured the US. Of course they changed their name back when they got home to Oz ;)
Crowded House in the 80s were mainly Australian. Neil Finn is a NZers. Paul Hester and Nick Seymour are Aussies. Sadly, Paul Hester committed suicide in 2005. Very sad :(

I see, there was also an American in Crowded House at one point.

Yep, after Paul left as drummer in 1994...the US drummer joined. Neil's Brother Tim Finn also used to pop in now and again. But for me, the real Crowded House will always be Neil, Paul and Nick.

I remember Sherbet, in particular their singer, Daryl Braithwaite. I love his solo albums, "Edge" from 1988 is one of my all time favorite albums.
I also had a bit of a soft spot for a single called "Most people I know think that i'm crazy" by The Aztecs. If my memory is correct they were an Aussie band.

My faves are:
Mondo Rock!!! Daddy Cool!!! (both featuring the legendary Ross Wilson)
Also Pseudo Echo (Funkytown, Listening) and Wa Wa Nee (Stimulation, Sugar Free). They supported Go West on their tour down under in May 2008 and they were fab.....as of course were Go West!
The Divinyls weren't a one-hit wonder.....along with their song 'I Touch Myself' they also had hits with 'Boys In Town' , 'Science Fiction', 'Pleasure and Pain' and 'Only Lonely'...and as far as I know they're still around.

I loved the Go-Betweens too, in particular "16 Lovers Lane", although I have most of their albums. I really liked Grant McLennan's solo stuff too-I still play his "Fireboy" CD a lot.;)
Were the Cardiacs Australian? I quite liked them.
My favourites were:
I Got You by Split Enz (reminds me of my last year at school)
& Who Can It Be Now? by Men at Work

Another vote here for The Go-Betweens. '16 Lovers Lane' is a great album. I'm a particular fan of 'Streets Of Your Town'.
Also, I only know one song by a band called 1927 (I think they're Australian) - 'That's When I Think Of You' was a minor hit in the late '80s and was excellent.

Just listening to Eighties Internet radio, and Icehouse have come on (Sidewalk)
Did they specialize in copying other 80's bands? as I would have sworn I was listening to Simple Minds :)
Hey little Girl was a Roxy/Japan soundalike
Yeh, Iva Davies (Icehouse / Flowers) couldn't make his mind up who he wanted to be ... Ferry / Bowie / Kerr. His previous band Flowers started out as a cover band doing Roxy, Bowie etc ... so hardly surprising there.

Mental As Anything are still going but minus Reg, Pete and Bird.
I lived in Aus throughout the 80s and there was some fine music around. One especially good outfit who never broke into the Countdown scene were The Slaughtermen.
I caught them purely by accident supporting another band down in St. Kilda one night.
They did a great live set on a late night ABC music programmes (whose name escapes me) and you can find some clips up on YouTube.
