    Re: One for comic fans

I never read Watchmen either. As far as comics go, I never actually grew up and progressed onto the 'mature' (and I use the term loosely) titles. I can't stand Frank Miller stuff or any of the grim, more realistic (and I use the term very loosely) stuff. Current superhero titles hold absolutely no appeal for me, (every year I try again to get into some) so my Marvel reading era tends to stop around '83.

Fans always gripe on about how comics can be for adults, too but nowadays it seems like no-one makes comics for kids any more. Or at least like the Marvel I used to read which weren't simplified, dumbed down for kiddies. They were just great stories.

Sorry, turning into a rant now.

Edit - Oh, and if you grew up with the b/w Marvel UK comics there's a book out soon(ish) chronicling the whole history of Marvel in the United Kingdom.

Loved my superhero comics as a kid. Still have the whole tatty dog-eared bunch. It's right what Pedro said, about Marvel comics being ongoing series, so you'd just accept these cliffhangers as a kid and know you'd no chance of getting the follow-on.

How UK newsagents ordered them, I don't know.

But loved them all the same. DC and Marvel both. Especially (as a 6-10 year old) the ones that were all fight with little talk.

When 16 in 1986, I returned to superhero comics and then. for me, it was 95% Marvel. Collected them till 1992, when I could not financially keep up with all the crossovers, multiple covers, annuals and expanding title range.

But yeah, I still pull out the childhood ones now and then. I must have read them thirty times each!!! Master of Kung Fu, Power Man, Ghost Rider, Super-Friends, X-men, Human Fly, Moon Knight, etc.

DC all the way for me I'm afraid and then sl;ightly later when my palette matured, I went on to Vertigo (which while still DC), catered for the darker subject matter like the Sandman etc.

    Re: One for comic fans

Reading this thread again it really has hit me how much my childhood from the early 70s onwards was dominated by comics. My Dad made me a big wooden comic box and some of my fondest summer hols moments are sitting out in the garden with friends reading, swapping and drawing our own comics (especially between '75-'78'). Although I eventually went on to collecting the US Marvel editions, the UK reprints really do hold an awful lot of happy memories and a new one coming out was a big event (I got told off for missing tea because I was down the newsagents as they were unpacking the new weekend's comics to grab #1 of The Super Heroes!).

After discovering, and subsequently spending many a happy lunchtime browsing, this site http://www.samcci.comics.org/ I've started buying up the odd issue of each of the Marvel UK titles (#1s where possible) with the 'back of my mind' intention to do a a similar sort of thing. Not as comprehensive - just 1 or 2 issue covers and sample insides of each title from MWOM up to the end of the 70s with a brief description of what strips were running in each one. The UK Marvels merged and altered titles so much during the 70s I'm sure it'd be an interesting walk down nostalgia lane for many 30-40 somethings. There is a site sort of attempting to do the same thing but it's painfully slow to update and I don't think it'll ever get anywhere.

good post Wil as my exposure to US comics probably shared a similar birth. As stated I still have a slight swaying towards DC with the exception of Superman( just to many powers) My fav will always be the Dark Knight and others with "normal powers" mainly because as a kid I to wanted to "sling my shield" without the pain of being bitten by a spider or falling into some nuclear goo!

Have to check my collection for the publishers name but I also like the series Uncanny and Strange Tales a sort of paper version of the Twilight Zone.... nuff said!!

Marvel forever. With the exception of Watchmen, and some other minor titles (Metal Men)I never read DC.I too grew up with the Mighty World of Marvel UK reprints.I lived and breathed comics throughout my childhood.
Favorires were Spidey,Fantantic Four.Never liked Xmen (early ones were ok),Thor or Silver Surfer though.I even joined F.O.O.M!!
