Does any one remember Jap Desserts and does anyone know if you can still get them from anywhere?

They were cube shaped (with round corners) brightly coloured, usually green, pink, yellow, white and brown. They were firm fondant on the outside and softer coconut fondant in the middle. They were sold by quarter.
There used to be odd ones in Dolly Mixtures (Mini sized ones as Dolly Mixtures were tiny) but I've not seen Dolly Mixtures for years either.

I can remeber these very clearly! Not sure if you can still get them. Last place I saw them was in the sweet shop in Beamish Museum but that was a few years ago. I used to really like them.
      Heaven knows I'm miserable now.

Hooray! I'm not dreaming. Is that at Chester Le Street? if it is I know where you mean, We took the children there many years ago. If I remember rightly we changed our money for old money and ice creams were something like a penny ha'penny. Bet they don't sell them now! :-)

It is near Chester Le Street yes. Not been in a few years so couldn't say if they sell them still. I used to really like them. They came in dolly mixtures too didn't they? I liked the strange texture of the centers.

A little shop in Barnard Castle, Co Durham that sells retro sweets sells them also. I can't remember the name of the shop now but if(when) I do I'll post it up.
The only thing to look forward to is the past

Sadly they no longer make them. Jap Deserts along with coconut mushrooms were my favourate sweets as a kid. Still buy Coconut mushrooms but long for Jap deserts and I have searched and searched for them but I was told no longer in productions. Probable cause of the politically incorrect name, they had to rename them or stop them. They obviously chose the latter!!

I remember the ones in Dolly Mixtures but not sure I ever had anything apart from that. Oh, yes, coconut mushrooms were a favourite of mine as well, haven't had any for decades, though. There used to be several sweet shops on our small high street, but sadly long gone now.

If you search for Coconut Mushroom there are several shops you can order on line - either buy a 3kg bulk bag for about £16 I think or you can get 120gm Taverner's sweet bags for about £1.30 - 1.50 depending on where you buy them. Many of those specialist retro sweet shops still sell them by the 100gm or whatever you want - but its cheaper to buy on line. You can get the bags on ebay as well from sweet sellers but they charge silly amount of £5 a bag but honest, if you find a B&M store that sells them they are £1.50 tops for the same bags.

I bought one of the 3KG bags last year - lasted me ages, though you got to be careful and not go mad with them (calorific!!). If you have a B&M near you then I would suggest popping in as sometimes they have the bags for sale (though mine haven't for a while).. Good luck but they are definitely still around. Try also Amazon if you cannot find a shop - but again they are charging too much at 3.89, though I noticed someone selling 1kg bags for £9. Gotta be worth a try!!

                            couple of links for you

                            3kg bag. https://www.hancocks.co.uk/taveners-...shrooms-sweets

and below link to buy 1KG bag
Coconut mushrooms are lovely, tasty Chocolate mushrooms which are sprinkled with coconut and have a fondant stork and are one of the best selling sweets even today.
